Artist Statement: I received a degree in Psychology with a minor in photography from State University of New York (SUNY) at Oswego, where I worked as photographer for the alumni newsletter the entire time. For my artistic pursuits I shot mainly in 2 1/4 square format, black and white. I was one of those annoying "black and white" snobs. I was also a "lab rat," and spent innumerable long nights deep in the darkroom. Thanks to the generosity of my former photography professor, I had access to the college labs long after graduation, until I left Oswego. After working at a mental health facility for several years, a crisis of vocation resulted in pulling up stakes for New York City. With my photography portfolio and a clutch of paintings in hand, I set up house in Brooklyn. Not long after, I was offered a group show in a Tribeca gallery. Soon after, I joined that gallery. As time wore on, it became painfully obvious that without the professional photography facilities I’d enjoyed upstate, I was on the brink of financial collapse. This is a familiar story, no doubt, and one that led me away from photography for many years. I turned to my painting, which I then pursued with a dogged single mindedness that saw me through the 80’s and early 90’s. Besides my own work on canvas and paper, I painted "backgrounds" for David Salle, painted sets for Carole Armitage, worked for Robert Longo, and made 3 dimensional models the late multi-media artist, Susan Bender. The East Village galleries that showed my work in the 1980s and 90s gradually closed their doors, thanks to the Wall Street collapse of 1987 (sound familiar). I moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1990, where I have worked as an artist ever since. I traveled with the John Kerry Campaign in 2004 (as baggage coordinator for the photographers and videographers) and found myself again with a camera in my hands, though this time a digital camera. After all, this was a life event to be documented. Since then, my camera has remained close by. So here I am, painting on canvas, board and paper, and working in photography. Arkansas has been very good to me, and allowed me the freedom an artist's life. I've shown in Paris, Amsterdam, and New York, had paintings in several Delta Exhibits, and won an Arkansas Arts Council grant for painting. I have work in the collections of Children's Hospital, C.A.R.T.I., and many private collections.
